<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>Driving performance requires a will to win and highly developed sense urgency.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>Doesn't sound too bad does it?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>And in the short term it's not bad.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>The problem is that you can only drive people, i.e. human beings, for so long, without burning them and the organization out.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>Tools for driving performance include hard handed performance management, a big stick and a commanding presence.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>Driving performance succeeds best in an environment where there is fear.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>Driving performance turns team members against themselves in what we used to call, creative conflict.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>Leading performance, on the other hand, requires a commitment to the long term, a lack of fear of the short term and a strategic vision.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>It requires and grows best in an environment of trust where recognition is used more forcefully than retribution; where the carrot is the tool of choice over harsh criticism.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>Leading performance develops and builds teams.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>Leading performance however is not for the faint of heart.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>It requires a commitment of time, an open embrace of change and the willingness to invest in your most important resources, people. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>There is no shortage of books, articles and voices that can tell you more about what you need to know to lead performance rather than drive it.</p>

If you have an employee who comes to work eager to do their job everyday, who knows themselves well enough to work efficiently and effectively, give them the sign to swing away.<o:p></o:p></font></span></i></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="COLOR: white; mso-themecolor: background1"><font size="3"><font face="Calibri">When we are young we are constantly on the move.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>Change is desirable.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>Risk is exciting.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>But as we grow older, especially if we have found that comfortable place we searched for, change is no longer welcome and risk is frightening.<o:p></o:p></font></font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="COLOR: white; mso-themecolor: background1"><font size="3"><font face="Calibri">I have a good friend who is a GYN Oncologist in Salt Lake City Utah, Dr. Christopher Jolles.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>Dr. Jolles is definitely a seasoned physician.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>He carved out a comfortable niche and had a steady stream of patient referrals.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>But two years ago that second life truth hit him square in the eyes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>He realized that by standing still he was actually falling backwards.<o:p></o:p></font></font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="COLOR: white; mso-themecolor: background1"><font size="3"><font face="Calibri">So what did he do?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>He signed up for training on a surgical robot.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>This required a significant commitment of time to learn and then perfect those skills.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>He was the first GYN Oncologist to use a surgical robot in Utah and is now the premier robotic surgeon there.<o:p></o:p></font></font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="COLOR: white; mso-themecolor: background1"><font size="3"><font face="Calibri">There was a considerable amount of risk in his investment of time and many colleagues questioned his move and wondered about the whether there would be any ROI to the risk.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>After two years, the ROI for Dr. Jolles is solid.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>He has decreased the time a patient must be in the OR under anesthesia, decreased the blood loss during surgery and decreased the post-surgical hospitalization time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>At the same time he has increased positive outcomes for his patients.<o:p></o:p></font></font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="COLOR: white; mso-themecolor: background1"><font size="3"><font face="Calibri">Now two years later, amazing things continue to happened.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>Dr. Jolles is revitalized.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>He is excited and has regained the passion that led him originally to medical school.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>And change and risk have become integral and positive forces in his practice.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>Just recently he began the process to relocate his practice after over 12 years in the same location.<o:p></o:p></font></font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt"><span style="COLOR: white; mso-themecolor: background1"><font size="3"><font face="Calibri">Being open to change and risk, Dr. Jolles significantly improved his performance as a physician, as a surgeon and as a human being who helps others face and then ultimately win their battle against cancer.<o:p></o:p></font></font></span></p>

<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 6.5pt; COLOR: #333333; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'"><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em"><strong><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em">This week I went to a professional basketball game in Salt Lake City.&nbsp; Behind and above me sat a family - three generations ranging in age from the late 60's to grade school children.&nbsp; The children put their feet on the back of our seats and screamed constantly and the parents and grandparents did not correct them, not once.<o:p></o:p></font></strong></font></span></p>
<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 6.5pt; COLOR: #333333; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'"><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em"><strong><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em">Whenever the referee made a call that the oldest boy&nbsp;disagreed with, he&nbsp;would shout out, "bullshit, bullshit.."<o:p></o:p></font></strong></font></span></p>
<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 6.5pt; COLOR: #333333; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'"><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em"><strong><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em">The first time it happened I turned and looked at the father who leaned down into my face and exclaimed, "It was a bullshit call."<o:p></o:p></font></strong></font></span></p>
<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 6.5pt; COLOR: #333333; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'"><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em"><strong><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em">The son, no more than 10, then yelled at me, "Get over it, this isn't Los Angeles."<o:p></o:p></font></strong></font></span></p>
<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 6.5pt; COLOR: #333333; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'"><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em"><strong><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em">I wasn't confused about my location actually.&nbsp; But I was confused by the lack of discipline by the parents and the grandparents.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>The parents refused to correct their children and it was clear that the pattern had begun with the grandparents who sat silent in tacit approval of the behavior and lack of correction.<o:p></o:p></font></strong></font></span></p>
<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 6.5pt; COLOR: #333333; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'"><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em"><strong><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em">This isn't a singular incident.&nbsp; I've been to restaurants where children have been allowed to run free and pick up food off of my table; I've been to movies where children scream and cry&nbsp;(and they are romantic movies) and I've been to malls where children are running free pulling clothing and food from the shelves.<o:p></o:p></font></strong></font></span></p>
<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 6.5pt; COLOR: #333333; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'"><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em"><strong><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em">These are children of every race and ethnicity, of every economic background, in every city in the United States.<o:p></o:p></font></strong></font></span></p>
<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 6.5pt; COLOR: #333333; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'"><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em"><strong><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em">When did we get to a point as a culture that we decided it&nbsp;was wrong to teach our children respect, courtesy and restraint?<o:p></o:p></font></strong></font></span></p>
<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 6.5pt; COLOR: #333333; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'"><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em"><strong><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em">What will it take for us to realize that these children will not be successful in tomorrow's world, they will not excel or perform at a level sure to bring them success.<o:p></o:p></font></strong></font></span></p>
<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 6.5pt; COLOR: #333333; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'"><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em"><strong><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em">We all need to step back and perform better as parents so our children will perform better as human beings.<o:p></o:p></font></strong></font></span></p>
<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 6.5pt; COLOR: #333333; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'"><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em"><strong><font style="FONT-SIZE: 1.25em">Performance begins in the home.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>It begins with the expectations we have of our children, of the parameters we set and with the discipline we provide against those parameters.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </span>Performance is directly and irrevocably tied to expectations.<o:p></o:p></font></strong></font></span></p>
